Quick Start

Below is a step by step guide that gives you the basics of Solar Vengeance 5.  After reading the Quick Start, you can also try the special Tutorial Scenario included in the game, in the "Beat2k Tutorial" folder, after clicking Begin Game.  When you play the Tutorial scenario, keep in mind the following:

  1. Select the "Beginner" Brain for the easiest learning experience.
  2. The Tutorial actually has 4 phases.  Select the phase to run when you select the Tutorial by changing the Parameter in the lower left of the New Game screen.

From the Title Screen, click the "Star Lord Profile" button to set your Star Lord name, Insignia, and preferred color.  Here you can also select the 6 of 28 StarShip types you can build during the game.  For now, it's OK to leave the first 6 StarShip types selected.

After you make your selections, click Proceed to return to the Title Screen, then click Begin New Game.  Select the "Classic" Scenario and click Proceed to begin the action!

The main objective in Solar Vengeance is to capture your enemy Star Lords' Capital StarSystems.  You capture other StarSystems by building WarShips, and commanding them to target the StarSystems you want to capture.  When the game begins, you are centered on your own Capital StarSystem and ready to build StarShips.  Click the Build StarShip button.

You now see a new user interface that you use to select the type of StarShip you want to build.  The 6 StarShip types you selected in your Profile are available to choose from.  You can also set the number of Engines to build, and in the case of WarShips, the number of Weapons.  In Solar Vengeance, a WarShip can only damage/destroy an enemy WarShip if the attacking WarShip has a higher Weapons rating.  If you attack a WarShip that has a Weapons rating equal or higher than yours, your WarShip is destroyed!

Build a series of WarShips with 8 Engines and 4 Weapons.  We will use these to capture nearby independent StarSystems to expand our empire, and allow us to generate more Resources.  Click the arrow buttons to build WarShips next to your Capital StarSystem.

After the WarShips appear, click and drag the mouse to select all of them on the map.  There is a nice juicy StarSystem with a Value of 20 right next to our Capital, and we want to capture that quickly.  After the WarShips are selected, click the target StarSystem to order them to attack it.

This is the result of our attack.  The StarSystem is captured, and now appears in our color.  Notice though that 5 of our WarShips were destroyed during the attack.  When a WarShip attacks a StarSystem, it reduces the StarSystem's Shields by the number of Weapons the WarShip had, but the WarShip is destroyed during the attack.  Only when a StarSystem's Shields fall below zero is it captured.

We should quickly build some Shields at our new StarSystem to protect it against enemy attack.  The new StarSystem currently has 10 Resources to build with, but will generate more as the game progresses.

Next, build a ScanShip and scout the area trying to locate your enemy.  To move a StarShip, just click on it, then click the location you want it to move to.

Here, we have discovered a StarSystem that was captured by the enemy Star Lord.  We've also come across several of his StarShips.  The question mark icons indicate that we do not know what type of StarShips they are.

Our ScanShip was attacked and damaged by one of the StarShips, the one with the "W1?" below it.  This tells us that we know that this StarShip has a Weapon rating of at least 1.

The only way to determine the exact details of an enemy StarShip is to use the SpyShip (a more expensive type of ScanShip) or the InkSpot (which identifies and permanently tags enemy StarShips so they are always visible to you.)

We eventually locate the enemy Capital StarSystem, indicated by the diamond surrounding it.  By using groups of WarShips, some with higher Weapons ratings, we can defeat the enemy WarShips and capture the Star Lord's Capital.

This Quick Start has only scratched the surface of the strategic options available in Solar Vengeance.  Familiarize yourself with the different StarShip types, try them out, then go into battle against some computer Brain opponents.
