Ceres, Inc. Idea Blackboard I will note ideas for Ceres, Inc. version 1 as they begin to form. Abstract Ceres, Inc. is set a few hundred years into the future, where commercial travel and development of the Solar System is in full force. The driving resource behind this movement is the rich ore deposits of the asteroid belt. In Ceres, Inc. you control a corporation that mines the belt. The "wild belt" is a somewhat lawless place, difficult to police. Mining companies use not only legitimate business tactics to maximize their profits, but can also use outright physical force. There's nothing sweeter than destroying or commandeering an enemy Miner ship loaded with precious ore! Ceres, Inc. is played on a dynamic map of the solar system where planets, asteroids, and space stations orbit the sun in realistic fashion. In the game, you accumulate money (Sollars) by mining ore and delivering it to customers who offer contracts. You can use your money to buy more ships, or buy stock in your competitors (the other players.) When you have a controlling interest in another player's operations you take them over and they are out of the game. Ships You will start the game with a few ships, and probably 1 refinery, near Earth. There will be a few broad category of ships, described below. The big difference here is that you don't build ships, rather, you buy your fleet from different ship producers (see Buying Ships).
Refineries You can bring ore to refineries to bring them up to various grade levels. Customers might offer contracts to buy ore at a certain grade level. Safe Zones An area surrounding Earth is a Safe Zone, where no hostilities can occur. You can keep ships here, but if you never venture out of the Safe Zone you can never mine, and thus never earn any Sollars! Cops There will be a number of police forces operating in the game. Area surrounding a Cop are considered a Safe Zone. Also, Cops might attack if a player attacks a neutral space station of a customer or a ship producer. Customers Various customers are sprinkled around the solar system, some are at planets, and some are at free-standing space stations. Periodically, customers will offer contracts for a certain amount of a certain ore at a certain price. The price will slowly decline over time, because the customer needs the ore quickly for their project. The first player to deliver the full ore for a contract gets the payment. There will be more customers on Earth, but they will offer lower paying contracts. The higher paying contracts will be from the customers in harder to reach areas. This will provide an element of gambling. You can play it safe and bring your ore in toward earth and wait for the contract there, or take a chance and move some ships to the other customers, hoping that a fortuitous contract will pop up. Buying Ships There will be a number of companies in the game that are ship providers. They will be located on planets, or in orbiting stations. Periodically, the producers will offer a group of ships for sale. An auction will commence for the offered ships, and players can bid on the lot until the auction runs out. The player who placed the winning bid (if any) gets the ships, which are positions at the producer's location. As time goes on, the produces will create new models of ships, with better capabilities. Buying Stock/Controlling Interest You'll be able to buy stock in your own company and your competitors. You can also sell stock to raise cash. If you buy a controlling interest 51% of a competitor's stock you take them over and they are out of the game. The stock price will fluctuate based on how well the companies are doing in the game, and on demand for the stock. The ultimate goal of Ceres, Inc. is to monopolize the asteroid mining industry. |
